WEST TENNESSEE DELTA HERITAGE CENTER HOSTING Q&A AND PROGRAM WITH ACCLAIMED WRITERS DOUG BRADLEY AND CRAIG WERNER

Bradley and Werner penned We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War

In partnership with the Stax Museum of American Soul Music in Memphis and the Brownsville Business Association, the West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center (WTDHC) is proud to welcome a program examining the role of music in society and veteran therapy services anchored by writers Doug Bradley and Craig Werner.  Bradley and Werner penned the interview and research driven We Gotta Get Out of This Place: The Soundtrack of the Vietnam War.

“Music is such an integral part of the heritage here in West Tennessee and we are honored that Doug and Craig would choose our location for this presentation,” says WTDHC Executive Director Sonia Outlaw-Clark.  “This book and its stories will resonate strongly with our veteran community, but they are also an important part of our education as a community and how music shapes our view of the world and affects our lives at home."

Full details on the presentation are below:

Date: Tuesday, November 17th
Time: 6 PM
Location: The West Tennessee Delta Heritage Center

Address: 121 Sunny Hill Cove, Brownsville, Tennessee 38012

Event: Presentation, Q&A and book signing

Bradley, a Vietnam veteran, and Werner, a professor at Afro-American studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, composed this manuscript examining veterans and the impact of popular music on the American experience in Vietnam. We Gotta Get Out of This Place casts a unique light on the music of the 1960s emphasizing the way that actual listeners embedded music in the fabric of their daily lives and the way that music helps heal psychic wounds.

“It provided an opportunity to enable some Vietnam veterans to tell their story, to finally come home and perhaps even to be healed,” says Doug Bradley.  “The music was honest and authentic, and it was everywhere.”

“I never associated Purple Haze with the smoke around a landing zone; no one I knew in the States thought Chain of Fools was about the chain of command,” says Craig Werner. “We shared music, but our responses were different. Not better, worse, deeper or shallower, just different.”

We Gotta Get Out of This Place will be available on Amazon and at book stores across the US on Veteran's Day, November 11.
